Seniors: It is time to apply!

Seniors, it is already mid-September. The time to apply is NOW.

Here are some helpful links to help you get started in the process.

Artists, and Actors and Musicians...Oh My!

If you are interested in drama or musical theatre, then check out this site to find dates and locations for the Unified Auditions. 

Artists may want to go to one of many National Portfolio Days. The 2012-2013 dates and locations have been posted. This site is full of information on different art related majors and college and universities that offer those majors.

College and Career Center is Moving

The Richland Northeast College and Career Center is on the move-literally. We will be moving to the newly renovated A building. In the meantime, if you need any assistance with the college or financial aid process, look for Mrs. Sanders in the Media Center.

Eligible for Test Fee Waiver?

Students who meet certain requirements may be eligible for a fee waiver to take the SAT Test.
-11th or 12th grade student
-Either a U.S. citizen or is testing in the U.S. or U.S. territories
-Meets one or more of the following requirements:
-Is enrolled in a free or reduced lunch program
-Is enrolled in a program for the economically disadvantaged (for example a TRIO program)
-Family's annual income falls within the levels listed by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) for free or reduced lunch prices
-Family receives public assistance
-Family lives in federally subsidized public housing
-Is a resident in a foster home

To see if you are eligible, check today with your guidance counselor. Remember that the SAT or ACT is accepted for most 4-year colleges or universities.

Vocabulary building for the SAT

Looking for another way to help increase your SAT score? Then check out this website with the 100 Most Common SAT Words. The Quizlet site allows you to play interactive games with the words. It even includes an auditory component so you can hear the words.

Academic Common Market

Are you a South Carolina student that has been accepted at an out-of-state college? If so, check the Academic Common Market to see if you may be eligible to receive in-state tuition at that college. According the Commission on Higher Education's website the Academic Common Market, operated by the Southern Regional Education Board, "allows for South Carolina residents who are enrolled in specific programs at out-of-state institutions to be charged on the applicable in-State tuition by the institution in which the student is enrolled." Eligible programs are those which are at least 50% different "in curricular content" than a program offered in South Carolina. Check out the list of this year's eligible programs.

End Product of College?

What is the end-product of a college education? Is it being educated? Is it getting a job? You will have to decide that for yourself, but if you, like many in America are concerned about getting a good return for your money, take a look at the slideshow put together by CNBC on "Colleges that Bring the Highest Paycheck."

The University of the South

In the years of ever-increasing college costs, it is wonderful to see some good news. One southern universtiy in Tennessee is reducing tuition and fees for the 2011-2012 school year by ten percent! Take a look at this article announcing Sewanee's news.

Located atop a Tennessee mountain between Nashville and Chattanooga, this university remains "purposefully small" and true to it's liberal arts beginnings. For more information check out their website: Sewanee: The University of the South.

Jewish Students

The Jewish Educational Loan Fund or JELF grants interest-free, need-based loans to Jewish students in need of final dollars to attend post-secondary institutions. For more information on how to apply, go to : http://www.jelf.org/. The application deadline is April 15, 2011.

FAFSA TIME

Seniors and parents of seniors, please be sure and fill out the FAFSA soon. Many schools have priority deadlines as early as February. This is a free application and there are enough resources available to avoid paying anyone money to do this for you. This year we have heard reports of students who have been charged as much as $600 dollars to complete this Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Read this warning article from the United States government about the increase in scams.

College of Charleston

College of Charleston is holding an Information Session and Immediate Decision Day this Saturday, Jan 29 a the Embassy Suites on Greyston Blvd. Register at www.cofc.com by the end of the day today. You must bring a transcript, a copy of your SAT or ACT scores, and have completed your application to be a part of the Immediate Decision portion of the day.

Richland School District 2 Seniors Going to College in SC?

If you are a Richland School District II senior who is planning on attending a South Carolina college or university in the fall, then check out the Sparkleberry Country Fair Scholarships. Deadlines are fast approaching so start working on the application today!

It's THAT time of year!

Yup, the time of year that all seniors and their parents dread. Fill out the FAFSA time of year! If you have completed your tax forms, then get right to it. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. Don't use any site with fafsa.com or .org other nonsense or you will miss out on the whole FREE part of the FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID. Both parent and student need to get their PIN number first as this serves as your electronic signature.

If you are a student who has lived in foster care, is under legal guardianship, or has a homeless status, then you may not need parental information. For figuring out your dependency status, check out this link.

Interested in the Performing Arts

In these difficult economic times, students are hearing that they should choose a college major that leads directly to a career. This may include nursing, pharmacy, engineering or a myriad of others. This often leads the student interested in music, art, or the performing arts confused and discouraged.

Students and parents may want to remember that a theatre major, for example, is not limited to performing on stage. These students are trained to speak and demonstrate in front of a crowd, develop creative ideas, and relate ideas to an audience. Many businesses would love to have someone with those skills. Check out this site from UNC Wilmington's Career Center to see other skills and potential jobs for students majoring in theatre.

Study for Technical College Placement Test

Interested in a two-year technical school in South Carolina? Then plan on studying for and taking the COMPASS test. According to Midlands Tech web site the COMPASS scores "indicate course placement as the starting point for your educational career." The test measures skills in mathematics, reading, and writing. Sign up today in E109.

FRANCIS MARION

On-site application review by Francis Marion will be held on Thursday, 1st and 2nd periods in the Science Atrium for Richland Northeast seniors. Application fees will be waived. You must sign up with Mrs. Sanders at ksanders@richland2.org by the end of the day on Wednesday.

Gap Year (s)

Some students want to take time prior to beginning college work to travel, work, or explore career options. City Year is an organization that may be a good fit if going straight to college is not for you. Check out their website and visit during one of their open houses. The first open house will be held here in Columbia on November 1.
